Summer Zen

Self-soothing in the Summer

Summer is here and the weather is beautiful (albeit hot) with the wonderful colors that nature brings at this time of year. There is a DBT skill called Self-Soothing that would be a great addition to anyone’s coping skills toolbox for any time of year, but especially right now.

Self-soothing has you using your 5 senses to actively engage in the present moment. How does one use this skill? Well it’s simple, use the nature around you to activate your senses. Maybe take a walk down your street and notice the green grass and leaves on the trees, smell the freshly cut lawns around you, feel the warm sun on your skin, listen to the birds chirping and bees buzzing, all while having one of your favorite iced beverages or popsicles. The key is to focus on all that this moment in time has to offer, not the future, not the past, but this moment. The key to Self Soothing is to allow your brain to focus on the here and now, and the beautiful world around you.

These are just a few examples of using self-soothing to help you find your Zen in the summertime. Find something that inspires you, refreshes you or maybe, just helps you find that sense of contentment in the long, lazy days of summer. So, take a breath, step outside and enjoy your Summer Zen!
